Africa Data Centres to boost West African presence with new Ghana facility

Africa Data Centres, which boasts Africa’s largest network of interconnected, carrier and cloud-neutral data centre facilities, has announced plans to building a 30MW data centre facility in Accra, adding Ghana to its existing Nigeria and Togo data centres.

The company, which is part of the pan-African Cassava Technologies Group, says the new 30MW facility will lay the groundwork for the company’s hyperscale partners to expand digital services and solutions to more countries in West Africa and will make Africa Data Centres the largest provider in the region.

According to Tesh Durvasula, Chief Executive Officer at Africa Data Centres: “We chose Accra as our next location since there is an existing high demand from hyperscalers, cloud operators and multinational enterprises to digitally transform West Africa.”

Durvasula also highlights the numerous African start-ups which are, as he puts it, “raising billions to debut disruptive models across a wide range of sectors”. He adds: “With Ghana being the second-largest economy in West Africa, it also is an attractive investment destination for international tech giants that want to expand their footprint in the region.”

While seamless connectivity is undoubtedly key to helping Ghanaian businesses and citizens reap the rewards of the digital disruptions happening across West Africa, the company points out that the lack of necessary infrastructure has resulted in slower growth in Ghana than the rest of the world.

This new data centre will be welcome therefore – and it is far from the end of the story. As we reported last year, the Africa Data Centres team aims to build many interconnected, cloud and carrier-neutral data centres across the length and breadth of the continent in what is described as “an unrivalled US$500 million investment in Africa’s digital transformation”.
