Operator Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE) and Welthungerhilfe to enhance food security through application of technology in the agriculture sector.
More specifically the partnership aims at promoting the Zaulimi app in Malawi and establishing it as an effective tool for fighting hunger and climate change and improving the economic lives of farmers.
The Zaulimi app assists farmers and extension officers with essential production and marketing information for selected crops, livestock and agroforestry. It also contains modules with names like Farming is Business and Market Place, as well as market price information for major crops that are traded through ACE, and much more. It was jointly developed by ACE, and Welthungerhilfe (WHH), one of the largest private aid agencies in Germany.
Speaking during the signing of the MoU in the Malawi capital Lilongwe last week, TNM Acting CEO Lloyd Gowera said the partnership will ensure sustainability of the agriculture sector and add value to its status as the backbone of the country’s economy.
TNM is zero-rating the Zaulimi app on its network to enable farmers to access the app without incurring any internet charges.
ACE chief executive officer Kristian Moller said the innovation is critical to value- added agriculture, adding that this wll help ensure that farmers are equipped with modern means of production.
“Through Zaulimi app, we are providing relevant support and skills required by farmers who want to build or take their farming productivity to the next level,” he said.
