Cable Bahamas (REV) has confirmed that it will upgrade its legacy HFC cable infrastructure with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology on the Bahamas’ most populous island of New Providence.
TeleGeography reports that the 25-year old HFC infrastructure will be replaced over the course of the new three years. The project aims to take in all of New Providence’s homes and businesses (over 80,000 locations) as well as further locations on the Family Islands. The deployment will be conducted by NewCo Fibre using its own resources.
In its annual report, Cable Bahamas stated: “Over the last eight years we have also conducted several field trials of FTTH technologies for some green field deployments, pushing our fibre access systems deeper into the network to get that much closer to our customers. At the end of 2021, the business was faced with some fundamental challenges driven by mounting competition, growing operational expenses in our plant and, unfortunately, declining customer satisfaction.”
