Kenyan ISP Mawingu secures funds for expansion

Kenyan broadband start-up Mawingu raised a total of US$9 million in a series B funding round to expand its operations to 25 counties in Kenya.

The company currently serves 16 counties and will expand to nine more from the cash.  It has 7,000 active users and 300,000 hotspot customers. Mawingu began operations in 2012 and was founded on the foothills of Mount Kenya in Nanyuki.

In a statement, the company said the fundraising was done in conjunction with new investor InfraCo Africa, and existing partners venture capitalists E3 and development bank FMO.

Mawingu CEO Farouk Ramji said: “Mawingu’s aim is not to simply drop an internet cable at someone’s house. We seek to help our customers access new opportunities for work, education, entertainment, and social connections through the power of the internet. Our company’s mission is driven by this very purpose: Open Opportunities.”
