Tele2 Lithuania has launched a 5G service in Vilnius using its recently obtained 700MHz and 3.5GHz spectrum.
In a statement, Tele2’s general director for the Baltic countries Petras Masiulis said: “We can officially announce that 5G is already working on our network. We have been preparing for this launch for a long time and consistently, so now that the permission has been received, the intensive phase of development of the commercial 5G network begins.”
Masiulis noted that the service would be extended to other cities before the end of 2022, noting: “First of all, the residents of the capital and other big cities will test the new generation technology. As before, we will strive to ensure that our customers receive the best quality at an attractive price.”
Tele2 procured a 100MHz holding of 3.5GHz spectrum in August for the reserve price of EUR3.0 million, and a 2×10MHz block of 700MHz spectrum a month later for EUR3.9 million (US$3.7 million). Both licences have a 20-year validity period. CommsUpdate notes that the operator is partnering with Nokia for its 5G deployments in all Baltic countries.
