Viettel cleared for 5G trials in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam’s market leader Viettel has been granted a licence by the country’s Ministry of Information and Communications to conduct 5G trials in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Valid for one year, the licence will enable the military-run operator to assess various facets of the technology to determine how viable it would be to deploy a commercial 5G network, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

The Information and Communications minister Nguyen Manh Hung has previously indicated that the ministry plans to issue four 5G trial licences. He noted that the government is looking to expedite the approvals process for the permits.

Viettel launched its 4G service last April, stating that its coverage reached 95% of the country’s population.
